Chalk Painted and Distressed Coat Hook Rack

These oak coat hook racks came with our house when we bought it. They are one of the most frequently used items in the house, but, I was never really pleased with how they looked. My current project focus is redecorating my entryway, so, I decided to get creative and try some new chalk paint techniques on these bad boys! It took me awhile to decide, then it came to me, Versailles Green on the top with areas of Primer Red peeking through, all with a nice dark wax antiqued finish…
- Oak coat hook racks before painting, distressing and antiquing.
- Looking better after 2 coats of primer red paint.
- I wiped off the top layer of wet paint to reveal the red underneath.
- The coat hooks after distressing but before waxing.
- Coat racks before and after antiquing with Annie Sloan Dark Wax.
- After buffing with a lint-free white t-shirt rag to bring out the slight shine.
- The coat racks, finished, in all their chalk painted glory.
Applying the Primer Red Chalk Paint
First I gave each coat rack a generous first coat of Primer Red (a color I love and had been dying to try on something). It was a hot day, so I placed them out in direct sunlight and they were dry in 10 minutes. Then coat #2 was applied.
Painting Versailles Over the Red and Wiping Away the Wet Chalk Paint
Next, I applied a coat of Versailles, a light yellow-green colored paint. While the paint was still wet, I rubbed portions of it off to reveal the red paint underneath in patches. I also did sandpaper distressing after applying a coat of clear wax (which makes it nice to sand as the dust clumps together and can simply be wiped off).
Applying Dark Wax to Antique the Coat Hook Racks
I used to be afraid of using dark wax, but now, I love it! In fact, I look at a piece thinking “OK, how will I best use the dark wax on this one?” It really adds dimension and brings a piece to life! In this photo, the coat hooks at the bottom have already been dark waxed, the ones at the top have not.
Buffing the Waxed Chalk Paint
A critical step in finishing off your chalk paint project is buffing the waxed finish! Use a lint free white t-shirt type rag for this purpose. You can see the slight sheen it adds in the photo below (it also removes the sticky wax feeling).
