How to paint kitchen cabinets white?
Posted by Michelle on Jan 27, 2012 in white kitchen cabinets | 6 commentsI recently sanded and stained all my kitchen cabinets, they are solid oak. Then the realtor said they are too darm (cherrywood color) and I should paint them white. White kitchens are the in thing i guess. Anyhow, do I have to sand them down again, or can I just paint over them with a thick coat of kills, then white paint? What is the best method to use?

We recently moved into a house with solid oak cabinets and the first thing I did was paint them white with tan walls. I put two coats of killz and then about 2 coats of white paint and they look wonderful! Good luck!
I’m a painter, first sand them down again, get a primer to seal them (kilz will be fine)and then paint them, if you just paint them you might have the stain come through and cause you alot more work.
I just painted mine white they wher stained a dark walnut all I did was prim them then paint they look great!
For the most excellent result, PREP is “key”. It is so tedious, but the result will be wonderful.
The surface needs to be free of everything!
So, wash the cabinets with TSP (trisodium phosphate) and rinse completely
Prime with Kilz
Paint with 2 coats of white paint. Purchase a quality paint.
Make sure the first coat is totally dry before applying the second coat.
The “cure/drying” time is what will cause success!
Have fun with it!
Side note………..I’d love to have cherry cabinets
Another one of those “Realty Experts” giving advice on how to sell a house that is not true.
White Cabinets are on their way OUT. The sale of stain cabinets at Lowes, Home Depot , and Menards is nearly 95% of their business.
Those white cabinets arent for everyone and Oak, birch, beech, and your color of stain is defenitely the going thing.
As soon as a house has a bit of trouble selling, those real estate people soon find a non valid reason and your cabinets are not one of those reasons for sure.
Leave your oak in there lots of people prefer wood oak to that paint, fact is majority do.
no man solid oak, that realter know nothing, solid oak is sweet, if i were you i would take them off and put them in you knew house,
