What is the best type of wood to build solid headboard for king size bed?

With the staining, it probably won’t matter much. From a cost stand point, pine would be the cheapest… Based on your design, consider plywood where ever possible for large sections, of course you’ll need some kind of molding/framing to cover the plywood edges.
use a good dark hardwood like walnut…
